We are excited to share that Lisa Gonzales, our Deaf Access Specialist, was honored by NorCal Services for Deaf & Hard of Hearing. She received the “Outstanding Leadership for Deaf Plus Individuals” award for her dedication to supporting Deaf Plus Individuals. Through her tireless advocacy and innovative approaches, Lisa has played a pivotal role in ensuring people who are Deaf and have disabilities receive the vital services and resources they need to thrive.
“Through your work over the years, you have elevated awareness of the Deaf Plus community. We recognize that through your leadership, the Deaf Specialists in all 21 Reginal Centers play a key role in ensuring Deaf Plus individuals are being served appropriately,” wrote Sheri Farinha, NorCal’s CEO.
Lisa joined the Department in 2022 and has been “creating magic” ever since. Her leadership helps shape services that respect individuals’ cultural and language preferences.
Her passion for this work is deeply personal. Lisa’s niece, Selah Bleu, was a charismatic young woman with Autism who was deaf. Lisa saw firsthand how individuals can face many challenges within services and supports.
“This experience fueled my drive and passion to make the world a better place for deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind individuals,” said Lisa.
Sadly, Selah Bleu passed away last year. Lisa remains committed to her mission. She works tirelessly to make sure deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals have a “seat at the table” in shaping a better future for their community.
We are proud to see Lisa recognized for her impact. Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved honor!
